The Penn State Nittany Lions football team is playing in the Big Ten Championship game against Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 7. Head coach James Franklin spoke with the media as part of the Big Ten Conference preview of the game on Sunday afternoon. Franklin and Penn State in the early stages of preparing for Oregon

Penn State finished its game against Maryland shortly before 7 pm on Saturday night. Since then, the team has worked quickly to complete it’s weekly process of reviewing the previous game and correcting mistakes.

Franklin sat down with the 24 hours after the kickoff with Maryland and, with that in mind, didn’t feel comfortable getting into details about his next opponent.

“This is early in the process. At this at this stage, we’ve really just started to watch them. [We] have cleaned up our game from this past weekend against Maryland, and have just started to study Oregon.

So, at this stage, I know they’ve obviously done a really good job of team defense. I know they’ve been disruptive up front, but for me to get into the details with you right now. I just don’t feel positioned to do that yet,” he said.

Franklin underscores how Pac 12 teams prepared for move to Big Ten

Penn State is the first traditional Big Ten Team to face off against all four new conference additions from the former Pac 12. For a conference that was known as a spread finesses league, Franklin says that the teams he’s played have done the work to build up their rosters in the right spots.

“I think a lot of those programs and a lot of those coaches studied the Big 10, but also studied the SEC and said, ‘How do our programs and how do our rosters look different than the Big 10 and the SEC? What modifications do we have to make to close the gap?’

And I think really, all these programs have done that.”
