James Franklin prepared for “big boy game” this weekend
Questions for Franklin mainly surrounded his team’s inability to stop the Michigan rushing attack last season during the team’s 41-17 loss. Franklin agreed that Penn State’s mentality would be critical this week.
“I still think this is a league that plays defense on a consistent basis as good as anybody.”
So that means things will be intense in the trenches between two of the nation’s top defenses, according to Franklin
“So it’s going to be a big boy game. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that, with both front sevens.”
Franklin discussed his team’s preparation for Michigan. The focus for many this year was the size and strength of his team’s defensive line. It’s been a common theme since last year’s defeat in Ann Arbor.
Franklin was asked about the transformation of Penn State quarterback Drew Allar since the end of the Indiana game and the challenges of slowing down the Michigan run game led by JJ McCarthy and Blake Corum.

Several times, Franklin referenced his team’s win over Maryland as a good example of things going wrong when a team has to play the game in a one-dimensional fashion.
“Starting fast was important. Our ability to make them one dimensional, negative 45 yards rushing. They just stopped calling runs.”
