The Penn State Nittany Lions take on the Michigan State Spartans Friday in a Black Friday clash. With the game moving up a day, so is Penn State’s practice availability. Head coach James Franklin spoke with the media after practice on Saturday to answer media questions about the upcoming game. Hear his full comments here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel.

Due to the compressed schedule this week, the Penn State Coach’s Show airs Tuesday night with analyst Alan Zemitas filling in for Franklin.

Penn State practice update

Penn State head coach James Franklin updated the media on his team’s progress through the short week. Franklin declined to give a descriptive update on quarterback Drew Allar’s status for the game.

“We didn’t throw him today while you guys were out there so you guys could blow up Twitter,” Franklin said jokingly.

“We’re still confident he’ll be ready to go Saturday.”

Franklin mentioned that the Penn State offensive coordinator search isn’t going at the pace you’d expect, given the timing of the move earlier this season.

“There’s less options out there than people think. When you really dig into it, there’s a small sample size. When I hired Manny, there’s probably four guys out there that had that track record, and there’s probably eight schools out there trying to get him.

Even if you look at hiring a guy with NFL experience. That seems like that sounds good but there’s not a whole lot of evidence of that model working on the college level. It’s a smaller pool than you’d actually think and there’s not as many obvious candidates as you’d think,” Franklin said.

It’s like recruiting; you’re trying to get the five-star guy but you’re trying to reduce risk. All those things factor in. On that note, it that would also probably help if it’s somebody that you have a relationship with too, because you’re not trying to figure that out. Are they a culture fit, too?”
