Penn State head coach James Franklin Wednesday press conference: Bye week
Penn State head coach James Franklin spoke with the media Wednesday night to update fans on the team’s progress through the first part of the bye week. Despite scoring 30 points per game, the Penn State offense has been the talk of the early season. Penn State quarterback Drew Allar is last among Big Ten quarterbacks with explosive passes, and the ground game hasn’t generated a run of over 20 yards from the starting running backs this season.
James Franklin discusses Penn State bye week plan
Franklin discussed his team’s work in the bye week to improve in that area and with the offense’s overall efficiency.
From a passing game perspective, offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich made his thoughts known yesterday.
“It’s a big concern with me right now and to us as an entire staff. We’ve got to remedy that fast. And we got to be on point with our landmarks, and our depths of routes, and our timing. That is something that we’re going to address and that is a big issue we have to clean up,” Yurcich said.
To that end, the Penn State head coach gave some insight into Trey Wallace’s status. The third-year receiver hasn’t had much impact since his week one debut despite being in the game against Iowa.

“Just more reps. Obviously, getting Trey back would help. He’s a guy that’s played a lot of football for us. We’ve got some new guys that we’ve got. We’re trying to work all of that out with all of the different coverages and techniques.”
Franklin clarified Wallace’s presence and mysterious availability for Penn State over the last two weeks.
“He was really full go last week and got stepped on and tweaked it again. It’s one of those things, but he looked good today, so we anticipate having him back,” Franklin said.
