Penn State loses Shrewsberry to Notre Dame
Shrewsberry’s name became a hot commodity at the end of the 2023 season with the Nittany Lions winning five of six games to finish the year. Then they went on a run to the Big Ten Championship game, cementing their spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2011. Shrewsberry’s group then knocked off Texas A&M in the first round of the tournament in convincing fashion 76-59. Ultimately the team fell in the next round to Texas, which allowed the Fighting Irish to finally interview Shrewsberry.
The 2023 team leaves a mark on history for the program
In his two seasons as Penn State head coach Shrewsberry turned the program around quickly, securing the highest-rated recruiting class in school history. But Penn State’s former coach made his mark on the court, putting together an unorthodox group of players that sparked the magical run to end the year.
Led by guard Jalen Pickett, the team played an unconventional style of basketball for the Big Ten, with Pickett as a quasi-post presence instead of a traditional big man. They surrounded him with shooters like Seth Lundy, Myles Dread, and sharp shooter Andrew Funk. The group could get hot and play an unstoppable style of basketball.

The result was a 23-14 season and a 10-10 record in the Big Ten. Penn State only crested the 20-win mark twice in the last ten years. One of those seasons was boosted by an NIT tournament championship run by head coach Patrick Chambers during the 2017-2018 season. The Nittany Lions won 11 Big Ten games in 2020 before the postseason was canceled due to the COVID -9 pandemic.
According to Thamel’s reporting, Notre Dame is making a significant investment in Shrewsberry.
“Shrewsberry will sign a seven-year contract with the Fighting Irish, sources told ESPN. He turned down a lucrative long-term contract extension from Penn State, sources said.”
