Penn State holds annual max testing day: Photo gallery
Penn State football held its annual open lifting session for winter conditioning. Again, a large portion of the team was on hand, testing the limits of their progress during the winter season. During the squat max testing day, players from the offense and defense and every position group mingled together.
According to new strength coach Chuck Losey, some notable standouts were freshmen Zane Durant and Nick Singleton during the winter conditioning period. He also singled out defensive tackles Fatorma Mulbah and Jordan van den Berg as some of the strongest athletes on the team. Losey also commended safety Jaylen Reed for his work this offseason, saying that he saw significant strides from the sophomore.

Durant, Mulbah, and van den Berg will be essential to Penn State’s efforts on the interior of the defensive line, with senior PJ Mustihper working his way back from a lower-body injury. If those young defensive tackles can take a step forward on the field as much as they have in the weight room, it will give Mustihper the breathing room to work his way back to full strength without rushing. Mustipher injured his leg on October 9th against Iowa and did not play for the rest of the season. The Nittany Lions’ opening game against Purdue is only nine months removed from said injury.

Speaking of injuries, several players who missed the 2021 season, including defensive end Adisa Isaac, d-lineman Hakeem Beamon, and offensive lineman Saleem Wormley, were working with the team. However, the exact timeline for their healthy return to the field is still unknown. Yet seeing them lifting with their teammates is an encouraging sign for the Nittany Lions.
Penn State wrapped up winter workouts this week and are now on spring break. The team will reconvene in two weeks for the start of spring practice. From there, the team will have five weeks and 14 practices to hone their football skills before they break for the summer. From there, the annual Blue-White Game is scheduled for April 23rd at Beaver Stadium. The open practice kicks off at 2 pm and will air on the Big Ten Network.
