Penn State hoops lands Icelandic point guard Bragi Gudmundsson
Penn State welcomed Bragi Gudmundsson, a 6-foot-5 point guard from Iceland, for an official visit running Monday to Wednesday this week. Now, head coach Mike Rhoades and the Nittany Lion program are welcoming him to the family.
Announcing his decision via social media, Gudmundsson has verbally committed to play for Penn State. He classifies as a Class of 2023 prospect and is 19 years old, and will enroll this summer.
Gudmundsson averaged 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.8 assists over 25 games played this past season with U.M.F. Grindavik in the Iceland-Subway League. It is considered the highest level of competition in club basketball in Iceland.
Penn State builds a roster
With Gudmundsson’s commitment to the program, Rhoades and his staff have nearly completely filled out their scholarships ahead of the 2023-24 season. And doing so has been something of an arduous process.

Inheriting a roster that included six senior departures, two transfers, and three lost incoming recruits from the Class of 2023, Penn State has had to build throughout the spring. That included earning the retention of Kanye Clary, Jameel Brown and Demetrius Lilley on the front end. Then, the Nittany Lions have added VCU transfers Ace Baldwin and Nick Kern.
Along with that five-man core, Penn State has worked to pick up six other commitments, capped by Gudmundsson’s decision on Wednesday.
