Penn State football has targeted and offered a new transfer portal entry. Revealing the offer Monday afternoon via Twitter, Gavin Holmes, a highly-sought cornerback out of Wake Forest, is the latest to land the Nittany Lions’ attention.

He first announced his intention to enter the transfer portal via Twitter on Dec. 1.

Holmes is a two-year performer for the Demon Deacons, starting seven games this past season and playing in 11, notching 23 tackles and nine passes defended. The performance came off a season in which he notched 18 tackles with one interception and four passes that were broken up.

Holmes is originally from Archbishop Rummel High in Metairie, La. Holmes was also rated as a three-star prospect in the On3 Consensus. He also had a national ranking of 1,269, was the 123rd-ranked corner, and the 54th-ranked prospect in Louisiana.

He committed to Wake Forest in January 2020. The choice was over offers from Mississippi State, Tulane, Colorado, and Old Dominion, among others.

In the past week, Holmes has added portal offers from more than just the Nittany Lions. Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Oregon State, Old Dominion, West Virginia, Baylor, Washington, Ole Miss, Texas, Kansas, Memphis, Houston, Tulane, Virginia Tech, and Arkansas have all also offered.

Penn State transfer portal approach

Penn State has been active in the transfer portal in the early part of the cycle. The Nittany Lions are looking at receivers, offensive linemen, running back, defensive linemen, and cornerbacks.

At the cornerback position, the intention comes from the known departure of two players at the position this offseason. Second-year corner Jeffrey Davis Jr. hit the portal on Dec. 5 and Joey Porter Jr. announced he’d forgo the Rose Bowl to pursue his professional opportunity in the game.

As a result, the Nittany Lions have zeroed in on Alabama corner Khyree Jackson, in terms of formally offered cornerbacks.
