MADISON, Wisc. — Penn State quarterback Drew Allar went to the Lions locker room late in the first half with an apparent injury at Wisconsin. His status for the second half of Saturday night’s contest at Camp Randall Stadium is unclear. The Badgers lead the Lions 10-7 at the half.

The second-year starter and junior from Ohio took a sack on 1st and 10 at the PSU 43 with 1:18 to go in the first half after right tackle Nolan Rucci, filling in for an apparently banged-up Anthony Donkoh, was beat by Badgers defensive end Jake Cheney, who landed on Allar’s left leg. The next two plays were incompletions. Allar fired one pass at the feet of running back Kaytron Allen while under duress and then sailed a third down pass over the head of an open Trey Wallace. He then came to the sideline, bent over for a moment, and proceeded to walk to the locker room with head athletic trainer Andy Mutnan as Wisconsin fielded a punt and then kneed out the first half on the other end of the field.

Coming out of halftime, Allar led the Lions back onto the field. He briefly threw at midfield with a brace on his left knee. But, it quickly became clear that backup Beau Pribula would come in as the first-team quarterback. And, that’s exactly what happened on the Lions’ first drive.

The latest on Penn State defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton

Penn State defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton suffered a first half injury, as well. Following a 28-yard pass by Wisconsin quarterback Braedyn Locke to receiver Will Pauling to the PSU 3, ‘DDS’ remained down on the field well behind the play. Trainers immediately attended to him. He did walk off under his own power. But, he was favoring his right leg, and specifically the groin area. He went right to the sideline injury tent and did not emerge from it until it was time to head to the locker room at halftime.

After halftime, Dennis-Sutton briefly tried warming up but quickly gave up on that idea. He briefly rode the exercise bike on the sideline. Now, he’s back on the field for the Lions’ first defensive drive of the second half. But, after just one play, he went off to the sideline in pain and took a seat. His night is likely over.

Anthony Donkoh banged up, as well

Starting right tackle Anthony Donkoh also exited the game in the first half. He gave way to Nolan Rucci with an apparent injury. He remains on the sideline but has yet to play.

Lions will have to build a second half comeback

Despite looking like the better team for much of the first half, Wisconsin leads by a field goal at the break. Penn State gets the ball first. It is not a must-score drive. But, it feels close to it. After starting the game with a nine-yard, 54-yard drive that ended in Wisconsin territory with a fourth down fumble and a nine-play, 90-yard scoring drive, Penn State mustered just 14 plays and 47 yards over its final three drives of the first half. All of those ended with punts. Field position is a major factor. Penn State’s best drive start position is its own 25. For the game, it is averaging a start at its own 17. That must change if the Lions are going to win.
