Penn State downs Iowa 23-14 in showdown at the Bryce Jordan Center

No. 1 Penn State topped No. 2 Iowa 23-14 on Friday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Read on to see how it happened in front of a record-setting crowd.

Second half Lions-Hawkeyes updates

10:28: Greg Kerkvliet beats Tony Cassioppi 4-1, and Penn State wins its 39th straight dual meet by topping Iowa 23-14 at the Bryce Jordan Center.

10:16: Max Dean rides out Jacob Warner in the third period to score a 2-0 decision win. It gives Penn State a 20-14 win with only heavyweight to go.

10:04: Aaron Brooks wins by technical fall over Drake Rhodes at 184 pounds, and Penn State is in the lead by a count of 17-14 with two bouts to go.

9:54: Carter Starocci beats Nelson Brands 2-1 and the decision victory pulls Penn State within 14-12 with three matches to go.

9:43: Patrick Kennedy beats Alex Facundo by decision in tiebreaker, 2-1. Iowa leads the Lions 14-9 heading to 174.

First half Penn State-Iowa updates

9:17: Levi Haines burns his redshirt and beats Cobe Siebrecht 3-2 at 157 pounds. At the break, Iowa leads PSU 11-9. The Nittany Lions freshman scores the bout’s only takedown to win before halftime.

9:09: Levi Haines will wrestle for Penn State at 157 pounds. His redshirt is now burned.

9:05: No. 7 Max Murin tops No. 13 Shayne Van Ness 4-1 at 149 pounds. He scored the only takedown of the match and also had a riding time point. Iowa leads PSU 11-6 after four matches.

8:56: No. 2 Real Woods tops No. 4 Beau Bartlett 4-2. Riding time made it a two-point difference. Iowa now leads Penn State 8-6 after three matches.

8:43: Roman Bravo-Young catches Brody Teske in a cradle late in the third period, and drops the Hawkeye for the first Nittany Lions’ lead. PSU leads 6-5 after two.

8:35: Spencer Lee tech falls Marco Vespa in the first period, but it’s a win for Penn State, as the Lions’ 125-pounder didn’t give up the full six for a fall. Iowa leads PSU 5-0 after one.

8:31: About ready to go. PSU sent Levi Haines and Terrell Barraclough out at 157. Penn State is sending Marco Vespa out at 125, and we’re underway.

8:15: The match will start at 125 pounds. PSU has not yet made its decision in regard to who will wrestle at 157 pounds. It could be Terrell Barraclough or Levi Haines, who of course would burn his redshirt if he takes the mat.
