Penn State is ranked for the first time in 2022; where are the Lions in the AP, Coaches Poll top-25s?
Penn State football was unranked during the first two weeks of the 2022 college football season. However, entering Week 3, the Lions are now members of both top-25s.
Head coach James Franklin’s team checks in at No. 22 in the Associated Press poll. In the Coaches rankings, which Franklin has a ballot for, Penn State is No. 23. Last week, the Lions only received votes and were No. 27 in both sets of rankings.
Penn State beat Ohio 46-10 on Saturday to improve to 2-0. It travels to Auburn this coming Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. matchup on CBS.
“I think a lot of guys getting the playing time was good,” Penn State tight end Tyler Warren said. “It kind of gets them out of the funk of not being in an actual college game yet. I think that’ll be good for the team.”
Added linebacker Dom DeLuca:
“Ohio was a great team. We played great and they played great, [and] we are going to celebrate this one. We will focus on Auburn [Sunday].

The Lions’ jump comes after their latest win and also a chaotic day across college football. No. 6 Texas A&M lost 17-14 to Appalachain State while No. 8 Notre Dame fell 26-21 to former Penn State assistant Charles Huff and Marshall. Then, No. 17 Pittsburgh dropped a 34-27 overtime thriller to No. 24 Tennessee, No. 19 Wisconsin dropped a 17-14 matchup with Washington State, and No. 25 Texas Tech was defeated by Houston 33-30. Finally, No. 20 Kentucky beat No. 12 Florida 26-16, and No. 21 BYU topped No. 9 Baylor 26-20.
Penn State adds to Class of 2023
In other Penn State news you may have missed on a busy Saturday, the Lions added to their Class of 2023 on Saturday night. Corner Zion Tracy, who is a three-star in the On3 Consensus player rankings, picked the Lions amid an official visit to campus. The 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect was all smiles before, during, and after the game and spent plenty of time with other players in the now 20-member class.
“I was talking to Coach [James] Franklin more and more over the past couple of weeks. I really liked how real he is with you,” Tracy told BWI’s Ryan Snyder. “Coach Terry [Smith] just knows how to have that connection with his players. Like, outside of football, there’s a bond there with his players. It’s the same thing with Coach Franklin. Both of them I felt like I really connected with.”
