Penn State football landed its second verbal commitment of the Class of 2024 on Tuesday afternoon. In Anthony Speca, a four-star linebacker as rated by the On3 Consensus, the program also collected its second Top 300 player of the cycle.

The 2024 Consensus Football Team Recruiting Rankings reflect as much, too.

With a second highly-regarded commitment in the class, Penn State jumped to No. 13 nationally in the updated rankings. The Nittany Lions’ average score is 90.582, fractionally ahead of Southern Cal (90.58) while trailing No. 12 Michigan at 90.678.

Penn State’s average recruit rating is 90.86, which is 10th nationally.

Explaining the On3 Consensus Team Rankings

An updated, modern approach to evaluating recruiting rankings, the On3 Consensus Team Rankings are a reflection of quality, quantity, and national standing on an industry-wide basis.

Along with determining consensus rankings for every individual prospect from the likes of On3, Rivals, 247Sports, and ESPN, the unique rankings also address varying class sizes at different stages in the recruiting cycle.

At present, that has created a system in which the average number of commitments used to tabulate a team ranking is three.

As a result, bonus points for racking up early commitments are eliminated from the process. And, the On3 rankings don’t only emphasize the handful of highest-rated recruits in the class, a process that becomes more prominent as the recruiting cycle goes along.

Penn State football national standing

Nationally, with the commitment, Penn State finds itself in a familiar spot among its competitors. Alabama and Georgia are Nos. 1 and 2 with five and eight commitments, respectively. Ohio State leads the Big Ten contingent and checks in at No. 3, while Notre Dame and Louisville round out the top five.

Florida, Florida State, LSU, Michigan State, and Oregon all have three-or-more commitments in their classes. Only Louisville has fewer than three commitments so far in the Class of 2024 while owning a top 10 ranking.

Next on the list, Tennessee and Michigan take spots 11 and 12, with Penn State, Southern Cal, and Arkansas checking in at 13, 14, and 15, respectively.

In the Big Ten, the Nittany Lions are fourth, remaining ahead of Iowa and the Hawkeyes’ five total commitments. Maryland, Rutgers, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Illinois round out the top 10 in the league. And, with one commitment, Northwestern is 11th, while Purdue, Indiana, and Nebraska await their first pledges in the Class of 2024.
