Penn State lands 2027 commitment from four-star OL Layton Von Brandt
Penn State picked up its second commitment in the Class of 2027 ahead of Saturday night’s White Out game, as four-star offensive lineman Layton von Brandt announced that he’s ending his recruitment early.
Listed at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds, von Brandt picked up an offer from the Nittany Lions in May and has been a consistent visitor ever since, camping with the staff in June while also attending the Lasch Bash in July. The Middletown, Del., native is also a high school teammate with 2026 Penn State commit Jahsiear Rogers.
“Jah is one of my best friends on my team and we have been on visits together to other schools that offered or recruited us both. I love him like a brother, so of course, that doesn’t hurt the situation,” von Brandt said following a visit back in October.
Penn State and every Division I coaching staff aren’t allowed to contact 2027 prospects until next summer, but von Brandt was going out of his way to build a strong relationship with Phil Trautwein, contacting Trautwein and members of the recruiting staff on his own.

FAU sources respond to Ray Lewis report from ESPN
“It’s all about how they have treated me and my family and how much they’ve built a relationship and showed me how important I am to them. I mean, as a player, all you can really ask for in a coach, aside from being coached and developed, is that they believe in your ability and talent and want you. Every [Penn State] coach I’ve had interactions with has done that, and my positive feelings toward the program have everything to do with that.”
The Nittany Lions now have a pair of commitments in the Class of 2027, as von Brandt joins McKeesport (Pa.) running back Kemon Spell in the cycle. von Brandt carries a four-star rating from two services so far. He is the No. 65 overall prospect in the Class of 2027 and the No. 4 interior offensive lineman nationally according to On3. He’s the top prospect in Delaware in the cycle.
von Brandt visited Penn State for the Nittany Lions’ win over Illinois back in late September.
“The biggest thing that stood out was Coach Franklin called my mom, dad and I down an hour before kickoff to the locker room to meet with us,” von Brandt said. “[Franklin] said a lot of schools will say you’re a priority, but I want to show you that you are a priority to us. He told me no pressure, but if and when I’m ready to commit, they are willing to take it.”
