Penn State lands another walk-on; Lions show up at the Senior Bowl, and a commit shuts down his recruitment: Newsstand
Penn State recruiting rolled on with another new walk-on commitment on Monday.
That and alumni at the Senior Bowl headline the newsstand for Feb. 1.
We also cover a commitment who has completely shut down his recruitment, and more.
Let’s dive into the top tweets and headlines about Penn State and college football on Tuesday.

We start on the recruiting trail.
Xavier Copening is the latest prospect to pick Penn State. The Avon, Conn., native was an On3 Consensus three-star quarterback in the Class of 2021. He never signed with a program despite holding offers from Connecticut and Syracuse, however. Now, he’ll walk on with the Lions later this year.
Copening could be used as a scout team quarterback, of course. But, he does not project at that position if he’s going to contribute. Expect to see him in some kind of special teams/athlete role to start.
In other recruiting news, Alex Birchmeier announced that his recruitment is completely shut down. It should come as no surprise. The 6-foot-5, 275-pound On3 Consensus four-star offensive lineman has been committed to Penn State since July 15, 2021, and has never wavered.
However, this does signal to other programs not to bother with trying to flip the nation’s No. 31 overall player, per the On3 Consensus.
Finally, Senior Bowl practices are underway. Penn State receiver Jahan Dotson and safety Jaquan Brisker have reportedly not made the trip, for undisclosed reasons. However, the rest of the expected Penn State contingent has.

Quote of the day
“We kind of chipped away. We hung around, we scored back and forth, and the same thing in the second overtime. I thought we responded at every opportunity to match their scoring in overtime. When they scored, we came down and score. They scored, we came down and scored.
“And that was us just regrouping in the huddles, talking. We got great leadership from our guys to stay focused and do what we needed to do to try and win the game.”
