Penn State football rounded out an impressive week of defensive additions in its Class of 2023 Friday, adding a commitment from linebacker Kaveion Keys. The four-star linebacker from Virginia is the third-overall player in his state and the 177th-ranked player in the On300. He joins defensive ends Joseph Mupoyi (Monday) and Mason Robinson (Tuesday) as the third player to join the team this week. He’s also the third four-star linebacker in the class, with Ta’Mere Robinson and Tony Rojas committing to the program earlier this summer.

Penn State lands another four-star linebacker

Today, host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Sean Fitz to break down his path to Penn State. Like Robinson, Keys was committed to another program until December. Keys committed to the North Carolina Tarheels in August after a long back-and-forth between the Nittany Lions and Tarheels.

They discuss the relevant details in Keys’ timeline, including his commitment decisions and when the feelings around his commitment to North Carolina changed. They’ll also discuss how he fits into the defensive picture for Manny Diaz and how he, along with Rojas and Robinson, will work together as a linebacking trio.

Lastly, T-Frank discusses what he’s seen from Keys on film and what traits he brings to Penn State. He and Fitz will also discuss the similarities between Penn State’s linebacker commits dating back to Micah Parsons and how the team seemingly targets a certain player to take at that position.

St. Thomas More coach details Joseph Mupoyi’s commitment to Penn State

Penn State picked up two commitments earlier this week, one of whom was St. Thomas More defensive end Joseph Mupoyi. A native of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Mupoyi has no shortage of physical gifts, but he’s also only been playing football for two years now. The 6-foot-4, 235-pound edge rusher originally came to the United States to pursue a basketball scholarship, so to say this has all been a whirlwind over the past year-and-a-half is an understatement.

On one hand, it’s no secret that he has a lot of development ahead of him. Compared to others in the class who have been playing all their lives, Mupoyi is going to have to learn and learn fast. But on the other hand, the amount Mupoyi’s progressed in just two seasons suggests the Nittany Lions may have found something here.
