Penn State football secured a key commitment for next season via the transfer portal. Former four-star edge rusher from Maryland, Demeioun Robinson, picked the Nittany Lions just hours after visiting campus over the weekend. Despite having reported interest from top schools like Texas A&M, Alabama, the 6-3, the 245-pound hybrid player picked the Nittany Lions fairly early in his portal process. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel break down the news shortly after his earlier announcement. For a complete discussion on Robinson’s impact, tune into the BWI Daily Recruiting Show.

Demeioun Robinson Picks Penn State

The Nittany Lions found their edge rusher in the transfer portal just under a week after Penn State head coach Jame Franklin publicly stated the team was looking for one in the portal,

“Between developing the guys we have and looking into the portal a little bit as well. Very similar to what we did with AK. We’ve got to find somebody to come in and help us with edge pressure and affecting the quarterback.”

It’s a key area for the Nittany Lions, according to defensive coordinator Manny Diaz,

“If you want to know my philosophy, the best coverage is pass rush and that’s been a big point we were trying to make throughout camp. We’re trying to get our sack numbers up, our tackle for loss up, and our disruption numbers up.”

A good fit after several misses

Penn State previously missed multiple times on transfer portal defensive ends, including Grayson and Gabriel Murphy, two of the highest-rated portal defenders this cycle. However, those misses might just prove to be fortuitous for the Nittany Lions, who land Robinson instead. The Maryland native was the 48th overall player nationally in the 2021 recruiting cycle and the fourth-overall edge defender.

What Penn State football’s scholarship chart looks like following addition of Demeioun Robinson

During the recruiting process, he chose in-state Maryland and played in all 13 games last season as a rotational linebacker. While his profile as a defensive is clear, Maryland used him in a hybrid role, dropping him into coverage and giving him fewer opportunities to rush the passer.

On3’s NIL valuation metric gives the edge rusher a $28,000 valuation which ranks 1,096th among college football NIL Ranking.
