Penn State’s growing tradition of landing a high-profile offensive lineman early in the next recruiting cycle continued on Monday when they landed top-50 prospect Jaelyne Matthews out of Toms River North high school in New Jersey. While On3 hasn’t ranked the Class of 2025 yet, Matthews already has a four-star rating and 90-overall grade from On3. He’s the 42nd player in the nation and the third-ranked offensive tackle in the On3 Consensus, which considers every major recruiting service ranking to give an overall grade.

Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins host Thomas Frank Carr to break down Matthews’ commitment and what it means for the Penn State football team. Snyder and T-Frank review the quick timeline to the 6-5.5 lineman’s decision and what we know right now about his decision.

Snyder and T-Frank start by discussing the impact of a 2025 commit and, while it’s early, what Matthews means to the team’s efforts to land top offensive line talent each season. They also give fans the intel about where Matthews can play on the offensive line based on his size and length.

However, with the commitment being so early, T-Frank wants to know how secure a commitment can be at this point. Are there clues that Snyder sees indicating he’s a strong commitment before his junior year? From Penn State’s perspective, do they take guys they’re not sure about early in the process if the staff thinks they can’t hold on to them? He and Snyder discuss those topics and more.

Next, they examine offensive line coach Phil Trautwein’s work. T-Frank has noticed a trend of how and when Trautwein signs players and how that commitment has worked out so far. Snyder fills in some information into that discussion before the pair can learn more about Matthews and his commitment.
