Penn State news, notes, and updates for Feb. 15 include a former Lion joining the Ohio State staff, an honor for Beau Bartlett, and more.

It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with Big Ten football coaching news. Former Penn State receiver Tony Johnson is joining the staff at Ohio State as an analyst, Lettermen Row reports. He is the son of longtime Lions assistant coach Larry Johnson, of course, who enters his 11th season with the Buckeyes after coaching in State College from 1996 through 2013.

“It’s kind of cool to see him walking down the hallway and we’re in the same building,” Larry Johnson said, per Eleven Warriors, which first reported the news. “It hasn’t happened in my career in a long time. I can’t be prouder of that.”

According to Eleven Warriors, Tony Johnson “spent the past 10 years working for Fischer Homes, a home-building company. He was on the coaching staff at Olentangy Berkshire Middle School in Galena, Ohio, for the past two years.” He has not coached at the college level before.

In other news, Penn State wrestler Beau Bartlett is the Big Ten wrestler of the week. He is No. 1 in the country at 141 pounds. He rose to that ranking before beating now No. 2 Real Woods of Iowa 7-2 last Friday. Then, on Monday, he beat Rutgers’ Max Hermes by decision, 4-1.

Quote of the day

“Coach Terry Smith and the rest of the defensive staff are very consistent with sending defensive backs to the league which tells you more than enough. That, along with the history behind the football program and finding out there has never been a Hawaii boy to go to Penn State has me interested in Penn State.”
