Penn State linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson is entering the NCAA transfer portal. BWI’s Sean Fitz first reported Robinson’s plan on Wednesday morning. The news comes after the Pittsburgh native was not at practice during the portion of drills open to reporters on Tuesday. He had been at practice previously this spring, and drew rave reviews from some of his coaches.

Robinson is entering his third college season. His first back in 2023 was impacted by a knee injury he suffered in high school. The defender did enroll early but it took time before he could get on the practice field. He ultimately played in just three games that season. A year ago, he saw time in 14 of the team’s 16 games, finishing with 11 tackles. With Tony Rojas and Keon Wylie both working their way back from injuries of their own this spring. Robinson seemingly took advantage of the extra reps given to him and ran with them. He was even praised by a teammate for his work through the team’s first nine practices as recently as Tuesday morning.

“He’s definitely my MIKE,” safety Dejuan Lane said of the middle linebacker. “He does a great job of helping the defense get set up. It’s always a pleasure to be on the field way Ta’Mere. He’s going to do a great things for us.”

A couple of weeks earlier, Penn State assistant coach Justin Lustig made note of Robinson’s progress.

“I think his confidence has shown up tremendously in the spring,” Lustig said. “I think just being here and the time here and his the reps that he’s gotten in practice, and the reps on special teams, reps on defense and games last year, have been invaluable to him. But he’s certainly a guy that stood out this spring.”

Robinson is the third player to depart the Penn State roster amid spring practices. Reserve offensive lineman JB Nelson did the same late last week. And cornerback Jon Mitchell is now in, as well. More Nittany Lions are likely to move on in the days ahead. The spring transfer portal window runs from April 16 through April 25. Penn State started Tuesday with 119 players on its roster. If the House vs. NCAA settlement passes as currently constructed, it will need to be down to 105 players by the time training camp starts. It is still expecting a number of Class of 2025 signees to arrive this summer, as well.

Penn State continues spring practice this Friday. It closes out drills with the Blue-White game on April 26. It starts at 2 p,m. ET. The contest will not be on television. The athletic department will announce more information for fans in the coming days.
