Penn State received good news Tuesday, as California wide receiver Marcus Harris announced that the Nittany Lions are one of 12 schools still in the mix.

A Top 50 prospect in the Class of 2025, Harris is coveted by many of the nation’s top programs. However, his recruitment will come down to Penn State, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M and Washington.

While Penn State doesn’t have a deep history when it comes to signing players from California, James Franklin and his staff are off to a strong start with Harris, hosting him for an unofficial visit at the end of April.

However, what makes this really interesting is that the Mater Dei prospect is expected to visit Penn State again in just a few weeks from now for the White Out game against Iowa.

“The campus was nice. State College is a nice, chill city,” Harris said following his visit in the spring. “I was able to talk to a few pedestrians and they had nothing but good things to say about the city. One thing for sure is that it is definitely a football city. I feel like there are no distractions in State College that could possibly get any player in trouble. I like that.

“The facilities are real nice. They have everything you need. I loved the stadium. I was just envisioning myself scoring and having the fans go crazy in Beaver Stadium.”

So far, Harris has visited 10 different schools. USC has hosted him the most, although Lincoln Riley is yet to offer. Oklahoma, Oregon and Texas have also hosted him multiple times. Georgia and Washington have also each hosted him once.

“What sparked my interest was the coaching staff and the great football culture,” said Harris, who’s primarily speaking with Marques Hagans and Kenny Sanders. “Penn State is one of the most iconic, talked about schools in the country.”

“So many great players have come out this program. Ever since I was young, the Nittany Lions were a team I would watch. One team I loved to watch was the 2016 squad, with players like Saquon BarkleyMike GesickiMiles Sanders and Chris Godwin. My favorite game they played was against my hometown team, USC. Ever since then, I’ve been heavily interested in the team.”

Harris is currently ranked No. 32 in the nation by On3. He’s the sixth-ranked wide receiver and No. 3 overall in California for his class. While On3 has him rated higher than the other three major recruiting sites, 247Sports, Rivals and ESPN all have Harris ranked in the Top 100 nationally. The On3 Industry Ranking puts him at No. 43 overall and ninth at the receiver position.
