Penn State makes new offer to transfer portal receiver
The net for Penn State football’s pursuit of a wide receiver expanded Tuesday afternoon. Announcing an offer received from the Nittany Lions via Twitter, Eastern Washington wideout Freddie Roberson is the latest to reportedly draw interest from the program.
Roberson previously announced a top four on Twitter on Dec. 23 with a decision date set for Jan. 13, 2023. Washington State, BYU, Mississippi State and Fresno State were his contenders.
Roberson told BWI that Penn State would be included among those contenders when he makes a decision. Roberson is reportedly set to visit BYU on Jan. 4. He also told BWI that he intends to take a visit to Penn State before making his decision.
Freddie Roberson career production
At Eastern Washington, Roberson has been a cornerstone of the offense. A redshirt senior this season, he is a two-time All-Big Sky performer, having sat out as a true freshman in 2018 before making his first appearances in 2019.
In 2020 and 2021, Roberson was a second- and third-team all-conference pick. He broke out with 33 catches for 470 yards and three touchdowns as a sophomore, then followed it with 49 catches for 779 yards and six scores in 2021.
That production didn’t let up this past season as Roberson again notched third-team all-conference honors. He played in 10 games, making 45 catches for 797 yards and seven touchdowns. Roberson also delivered the best yards per catch average of his career at 17.7 yards per reception.
Penn State transfer portal receiver pursuit
Penn State hasn’t been shy about its desire to find a receiver in the transfer portal this cycle.
With Parker Washington announcing he’ll move on to the NFL, and Mitch Tinsley exhausting his eligibility, the Nittany Lions have a relatively young and inexperienced room ahead of the 2023 season as it stands.

“We are going to be in the transfer portal, there is no doubt about it,” receivers coach Taylor Stubblefield said. “I mean, if you look at a guy like Mitch Tinsley, high productive guy at a Group of Five school that was able to come in, learn the system, really learned all three positions, and he was able to do it at a high level.
“We’re looking for a guy who can help us win, no matter if it’s high school or the portal. And so yeah, we’re looking, and we got some guys in mind. And this is a unique period of, you did have visits last year, [but] Mitch didn’t even visit. Now you have some ability to visit. These next 16 days will be interesting to see who is going to be the right guys for us.”
With that in mind, Stubblefield added that the Nittany Lions have their eyes on adding multiple transfer portal receivers.
“We plan on taking two,” Stubblefield said. “We got a lot of young guys. And we signed one in this class intentionally. We could have had multiple guys committed that are commited to some other schools right now, we could have had them committed in the summer, [but] we just didn’t think that they were right for us.
“So we feel like our best way to satisfy what our need is, which is probably a little bit of some older guys, is possibly going to the transfer portal and seeing who could help us win.”
