Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 7 feature a bevy of updates from the Nittany Lions’ local media day in State College.

It’s time to dive into Monday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with media day. Head coach James Franklin and his coaches and players all met with reporters over the course of about two hours on Sunday at Beaver Stadium. Unsurprisingly, the battle at quarterback between Drew Allar and Beau Pribula was a top talking point.

“Drew and Beau obviously in year two, they look like guys that are year two in the same system mentally, physically, and they’ve both gotten stronger, leaner, faster, more confident with their reads, their accuracy, their decision making, and those type of things,” Franklin said. “They’ve been impressive.

“Beau and Drew, they look like guys that are year two and more experienced guys and confident and know how to execute and run the offense. Both of them have the teams respect. We aren’t making any announcements or decisions at any positions at this point.”

We also learned that defensive end Smith Vilbert is out for the 2023 season due to injury. Franklin also reacted to Oregon and Washington joining the Big Ten for the 2024 season.

“I do think there’s some challenges that come along with it,” Franklin said. “It’s very different for most of the people in this room. It’s very different than the college football that we all grew up with, and not really college football, but college athletics, where it was pretty regional. I do think it’s a huge win for USC and UCLA from a travel perspective. I think it’s a huge win for them.”

Quote of the day

“I think all of college football is going to have an opportunity to see him perform. Obviously, Kalen is the known corner so scouting reports are going to say stay away from him, much like they did last year with Joey Porter. That’s how Kalen became Kalen.

“Hopefully this season, that’s how Johnny’s going to become Johnny.”
