Penn State news, notes, and updates for May 2 include a men’s volleyball NCAA tournament preview plus Nittany Lion lacrosse updates.

Head coach Mark Pavlik’s team opens the latest stage of the postseason with a play-in game at Daemen tonight. The two sides are battling for the No. 7 seed and right to face No. 2 Hawaii in the quarterfinal round of next weekend’s eight-team men’s volleyball tournament in Columbus to decide the national champion. The Wildcats are 15-12 and the Nittany Lions 14-15. ESPN+ will stream the match, which starts at 7 p.m. ET.

In other news, the Lions men’s lacrosse lost its Big Ten tournament opener 10-8 to Maryland on Thursday. The Terrapins led 6-2 at halftime before Penn State stormed back to tie the contest 6-6 at the end of three quarters. It was 7-7 in the fourth quarter. But, Maryland eventually scored three of the game’s final four goals to win. The Lions now await the NCAA Tournament at-large selection process.

On the women’s lacrosse side of things, head coach Missy Doherty is stepping down after 15 seasons at the helm of the program. Assistant coach Steph Lazo is the interim head coach. A search for Doherty’s permanent replacement is underway.

Quote of the day

“Roseby Lubintus’ game is all about length and strength at this point. He has a big frame and elite length. I think he has a significant punch and power at the point of contact. Once he gets his hands on defenders, he’s able to impose his will. I think there are a lot of encouraging traits and skills to work with here for a developmental offensive lineman.

“He came onto college radars before he saw significant varsity playing time. So, we were really waiting to see what he looked like as a junior, and I do think there are some encouraging signs. I could see him playing tackle to guard at the next level. His skill set right now may be more suited to guard, but he certainly has that elite length that you want to have on the edge at tackle.”
