No. 14 Penn State closes out the regular season portion of its schedule with a visit from Michigan State on Saturday. The Land Grant Trophy will be on the line when the two sides meet in each school’s Big Ten finale. But, we won’t know when it will start until late this Saturday night or early Sunday morning.

The television partners of the Big Ten Conference have placed the game on a the six-day window. This game has often been played at 3:30 p.m. since Ohio StateMichigan always starts at Noon ET. This year is likely to be no different. But, we won’t know for a few more days.

Head coach James Franklin’s team will play its penultimate contest of the regular season this Saturday at Rutgers. That game starts at 3:30 p.m. ET as well. It marks four straight Penn State games in that television window to end the year.

All-time, Michigan State leads the series 18-17-1. The Land Grant Trophy currently resides in East Lansing, Mich., as well after the Spartans topped the Lions last season 30-27 at home. Penn State won the last meeting between the schools in State College by a 39-24 count back in 2019. However, they’ve dropped three of the last five matchups and six of the last 10 against the green and white.

What’s up with Michigan State before it faces Penn State?

The Spartans are quite possibly the biggest disappointment in the Big Ten and all of college football, for that matter. After a tremendous 2021 season, Mel Tucker was rewarded with a massive new deal that set off a chain reaction across the sport and in some small way played a part in James Franklin getting a similar new contract. But, while the Lions bounced back from a bad year, the Spartans fell off. They are now 5-5 after beating Rutgers 27-21 on Saturday and need to win one of their last two games” to secure bowl eligibility. However, they won’t be favored to do so.

“They have some really good players,” Tucker said after beating the Scarlet Knights. “They play hard and it’s physical out there. It was November Big Ten football. We had good football weather and we celebrate our veterans this weekend. Just happy to get the job done. Get the win.

“We have a 24-hour rule, so we’ll come back tomorrow ready to keep chopping. We did some good things today. It’s important to finish strong. Play our best football in November. It’s a sign of high character and a good football team to play their best down the stretch, and that’s what we’re aiming to do.”

Michigan State faces Indiana this week. The game starts at Noon ET at Spartan Stadium.
