Penn State NFL Combine roundup: How to watch Jaylen Reed today; latest news and notes

The NFL Scouting Combine will run through the weekend in Indianapolis, Ind. However, the five-man Penn State contingent on hand for the annual event at Lucas Oil Stadium ends its latest stop on the path to the Draft today. After Abdul Carter and Kobe King got into town back on Monday, safeties Jaylen Reed and KJ Winston Jr., plus tight end Tyler Warren, arrived on Tuesday. The first group left yesterday. The second does so today. Here’s what we learned so far and what we’re watching for on Friday.
Penn State’s Combine start features no on-field fireworks but plenty of news
Throughout most of the James Franklin era, most, if not all, of the Penn State talk at the Combine has focused on someone(s) outstanding testing performance. This year, that has not been the case. But, that does not mean that the Lions haven’t been in the news.
Former All-American, potential No. 1 overall pick, and sure-fire top-five selection Carter made headlines when he said he would not work out as he continued to recover from a shoulder injury suffered during the Lions’ College Football Playoff run. At the time, he put his sights on the Penn State Pro Day, which is on March 28. However, outside observers were briefly forced to look away from that as news broke from ESPN that a stress reaction was found in Carter’s right foot during routine medical examinations. After about 16 hours of uncertainty, multiple media reports said Carter would not need surgery and that he should be good to work out in State College one month from Friday.
“I couldn’t be more confident that this will be a nonfactor where he’s drafted,” Carter’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told ESPN Thursday. “He will put on a show at his pro day.”

Besides Carter, Winston Jr., is also not working out. He had surgery in October to deal with a partially torn ACL. PennLive reports that he hopes to be able to run the 40-yard dash at Penn State Pro Day. But, time will tell on that front.

On a different note, Warren is also not working out in Indianapolis. But that is not injury-related.
“Just kind of sitting down, talking with my agent and stuff that we were coming with at the moment, staying focused on keeping my body as healthy as I can possibly have it as we get into the preseason process,” Warren told Statecollege.com when asked why he would not take the field. He already projects as a top-10 pick. And, nothing he could do in Indianapolis would change that in a positive way.
Recapping Kobe King’s time in Indianapolis
King is the only Penn State player who could have come back for another season due to uncertainty about his NFL Draft stock. But, he opted not to and did receive a Combine invite. He checked in at 236, 12 pounds lighter than he was in State College, and did not do any of the off-field testings like the bench press or 40-yard dash. But, he did do the on-field portion of the testing. It stands to reason that he will be more active at Pro Day next month.
What will Jaylen Reed do today?
The NFL Network will have live coverage of the defensive back and tight end workouts starting at 3 p.m. ET on Friday. Click here to watch it. Considering three of the Penn State players sat out of drills in Indy while King only did on-field work, it’s hard to know exactly what Reed will do today. The Michigan native performing all off- and on-field drills, though, would not surprise us. He’s motivated to prove that his draft stock should be higher than it is.
