Penn State crusied to a 2-0 record to start the 2022 season Saturday, defeating Ohio in its home opener, 46-10. With quarterback Sean Clifford and the regular starters creating a sizeable lead at halftime, head coach JamesFranklin was aggressive in giving his backups an opportunity. Overall, more than 70 players played, including a dozen prospects from Penn State’s talented Class of 2022.
Freshman running back Nick Singleton was arguably the star of the show, rushing for 179 yards and two touchdowns on just 10 carries. It was the first time a Penn State running back surpassed 100 yards since 2020 against Michigan. Not only that, but both of his scores came on explosive plays, rushing for 70-yard score in the first half and a 44-yard touchdown late in the third quarter.
We say arguably, however, because classmate DrewAllaralso grabbed the attention of fans, throwing for two touchdowns on just eight passing attempts. He threw for a modest 88 yards, but Penn State fans enjoyed all 20 of his snaps. His 88.4 grade by Pro Football Focus backs up what everyone saw: the freshman looked pretty good.
