Between the transfer portal and name, image and likeness, there’s no shortage of controversial topics in college athletics currently. With recruiting taking the spotlight throughout the summer, NIL has taken center stage in recent months. Eight-figure deals to high school quarterbacks will always be a hot topic.

But once the season begins, the NCAA’s transfer portal will be back in the news and as polarizing as ever.

When the transfer portal was created in 2018, it was simply an online database for coaches to find prospective student-athletes. It wasn’t until 2021, when the NCAA allowed players to move from one school to the next without having to sit out that the modern transfer portal became what it is today.

Now, it appears as if the NCAA’s transformation committee is closing in on some potential changes. A little under a month ago, it was reported that specific transfer windows were likely to be implemented to make it easier for schools to manage their rosters. Now, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, we know what’s being proposed for both fall and spring sports.

According to Thamel’s Twitter feed, fall would be given two separate windows. The first of those windows will begin immediately after the season and last 45 days. The second would take place in the spring and will last for just 15 days beginning on May 1.

For spring sports, the committee is recommending one 60-day window once that sport’s season commences. Thamel also noted that players will still be given the opportunity to enter the transfer portal outside of the windows. However, if they do, they’ll be forced to sit out a year.

The Division I Council will next meet about this topic July 20. A vote is expected to come Aug. 3.
