Penn State's 2024 recruits react to Sept. 1 contact

Penn State may be kicking off its season Thursday, but that’s not what had the staff’s focus late last night. With the calendar rolling over to Sept. 1, James Franklin, his staff and all Division I football coaches can now contact junior prospects, which is what they spent their night doing once the clock hit midnight.

Below are some of the top prospects who confirmed via Twitter that they spoke with the Nittany Lions coaching staff late Wednesday evening. Players are listed alphabetically by their last names.

OL Brandon Baker

Brandon Baker is a top-100 offensive line prospect from Mater Dei in California. He earned an offer from the Nittany Lions in April and is now up to 16 offers total. USC has already gotten him on campus five times.

QB Davi Belfort

The son of former UFC fighter Vitor Belfort, Davi reclassified from 2025 to 2024 earlier this year. It’s unclear where he sits now on Penn State’s board after moving up a year, but he has visited previously and spoke highly of the trip. He’s up to 28 offers now and has visited 12 schools already.

CB Asaad Brown

A native of Virginia, Asaad Brown earned an offer Penn State in Feb. 2021. He has yet to visit. North Carolina, N.C. State and Texas A&M have all hosted him at least twice so far.

Ath. Boo Carter

A four-star prospect in the On3 Consensus, Boo Carter picked up an offer from Penn State at the end of April. Michigan and Michigan State have both gotten him on campus twice. Kentucky and Tennessee are two others off to a strong start.

Saf. Shamir Fredericks

– A native of Brooklyn, Shamir Fredericks has been on campus twice so far, camping in June and then returning for the Lasch Bash in July. He earned an offer from Penn State back in May. Michigan State and West Virginia are among the early competitors.

QB DJ Lagway

A four-star prospect, DJ Lagway is one of the top quarterbacks in the country, ranking No. 5 overall in the On3 Consensus. Since earning an offer in February, he’s yet to visit Penn State. Texas A&M has already hosted him eight times. He’s also visited a few other top SEC schools.

OL Juan Minaya

New Jersey prospect Juan Minaya took an unofficial visit to Penn State in April and ended up earning an offer from the staff about a month later. So far, Michigan State is the only other school he’s visited.

Saf. Cam Richardson

– A three-star prospect from St. Peter’s Prep in New Jersey, Cam Richardson earned an offer from Penn State in the beginning of April. He then visited a few weeks later. Kentucky, Michigan State, Pitt, West Virginia are a few other notable schools that have offered.

CB Ellis Robinson

A five-star prospect, Ellis Robinson grew up in New Haven, Conn. After starting his career at Iona Prep in New York, he elected to transfer to IMG Academy in Florida this past offseason. Robinson is currently ranked No. 7 overall nationally and is the second-ranked cornerback. Penn State was included in his top 10 back in June along with many of the nation’s top college programs.

WR Rico Scott

Bishop McDevitt WR Rico Scott is one of Penn State’s top wide receivers in the class. He’s been to Penn State four times already. Scott has also checked out Alabama, Baylor, Texas and Texas A&M so far. He’s earned 17 scholarship offers so far.

Saf. Jaiden Spearman

A native of North Carolina, Jaiden Spearman now attends Loomis Chaffee in Connecticut. The three-star cornerback has been on campus twice so far, attending the Blue-White Game in April, followed by the Lasch Bash BBQ in July.

WR Alex Taylor

Alex Taylor is a four-star wide receiver in the On3 Consensus rankings. The Greensboro, N.C., native claimed an offer from the Nittany Lions in Dec. 2021. He’s yet to visit Penn State, but has seen Clemson, N.C State, North Carolina and Virginia Tech, among others.

WR Mekhai White

– A native of Virginia, Mekhai White has been a regular in State College, visiting four times since June 2021. The three-star wide receiver has actually visited 14 different schools already. Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and Virginia Tech have all gotten him on campus multiple times.

DT Jahsear Whittington

– Imhotep Charter DL Jahsear Whittington committed to Pitt back in April. He’s been to Penn State three times so far.

CB Kenny Woseley Jr.

– Teammates with Whittington at Imhotep Charter, Kenny Woseley is one of a few cornerbacks that Penn State is high on in 2024. He’s been to University Park more than any other campus, visiting four times since last summer.
