Penn State extended a verbal scholarship offer to four-star running back London Montgomery Friday.

Following a very impressive junior season – Montgomery rushed for 2,356 yards and 36 touchdowns – the Scranton, Pa., native has been asked about regularly by Nittany Lion fans, especially those in northeastern Pennsylvania. On Sunday, those fans finally got their answer, as Montgomery announced that Penn State running backs coach Ja’Juan Seider officially extended a verbal scholarship offer a few days ago.

“I was actually at school when I got the offer,” Montgomery said, clarifying that it came on Friday. “[Seider] said that he wanted to call because they felt like I’ve been up there for a couple of visits and we’ve built a bit of a relationship now. He said that he wanted to keep that going, so they’re going to offer me.

“Of course, I was excited. My guidance counselor was with me. We were both hyped.”

The decision to offer came just a week after On3 named Montgomery to the On300.

“I think with London Montgomery, he had a very productive year,” said On3 Director of Scouting Charles Power. “He had a really nice yards per carry and solid speed. I do want to get more info on him and monitor how he does in track this year. He honestly kind of popped up on my radar late when we were going through the cycle and the more I watched him, the more I saw that he’s another guy that should continue to get better. I think between his season and some of the things we saw from his athleticism was enough to put him in there.”

Montgomery has visited Penn State a few times already. Back in November, he attended the game against Michigan. The 5-foot-10, 180-pound running back then returned at the end of January for a junior day. Montgomery made it no secret in an interview earlier this week that Penn State was an offer he coveted.

“Penn State has been my favorite team growing up,” Montgomery said. “Since that game against Michigan, the White Out, which I believe was 2019, I’ve really followed them closely. The environment looks really crazy. I always wanted to play in that environment.”

With that said, there’s no shortage of competition for Penn State. Already up to 17 scholarship offers, Montgomery visited Syracuse this past weekend.

“It was really good,” he said, referring to the visit. “We ended up going to the basketball game, so they didn’t show us too much, but it was really nice. I liked the environment there. It was a good time.”

Montgomery said last week that he was planning to go to Boston College, March 19. Penn State is also hoping to get him on campus in the coming weeks, so that could be something to watch for.

Other notable schools that have offered include Arizona State, Iowa, Louisville, Michigan State and West Virginia.

“The schools I have the best relationship with right now are probably Rutgers, Boston College and Utah,” Montgomery said last week. “Michigan State hits me up from time to time, Syracuse hits me up from time to time. I would also probably say that Louisville and Buffalo are speaking with me. I have good, honest relationships with coaches at all of those schools.”

Montgomery added, “I’m not leaning towards any schools right now. I know which schools have thrown me an offer just because they want to get their name in the mix, compared to which schools really want me and are recruiting me hard. So, I’m really just waiting right now and seeing if I can pick up some other options. I want to go wherever I can play the most, but I also want to be patient and make the best decision I can.”
