Is Penn State on the verge of another commitment?

After landing tight end Andrew Rappleyea and quarterback Marcus Stokes earlier this month, head coach James Franklin and the Penn State coaching staff may be about to add a third, as four-star defensive end Jameial Lyons confirmed that he’s no longer planning to announce his commitment in August. Instead, the Philadelphia native tweeted Monday evening that he’s planning to commit later this week, April 22.

“After a long conversation with me and my mother we think it’s best to move my commitment day earlier then expected,” Lyons tweeted. “My new commitment date will be April 22nd @ 1pm.”

According to On3’s Recruiting Prediction Machine, Penn State is a massive favorite with Lyons. PSU is currently projected to have a 95.8 percent chance of landing his commitment. I logged an RPM prediction for the Lions back on March 27.

He’s also visited Penn State substantially more than any other school. In fact, Lyons was just on campus Monday, traveling to State College with a few teammates from Roman Catholic. It was also his second visit in just over two weeks, as he also made the trip back on April 6.

Lyons spoke very highly of Manny Diaz following that visit. It was the first time that he met Penn State’s new defensive coordinator.

“He’s a great guy,” Lyons said, referring to Diaz, who he met for the first time. “He has a certain type of plan and mindset that he wants to add to Penn State and I think it’s going to be great for them. He created the takeaway chain at Miami, so he’s fun. I think his mind is on go all the time. That’s the kind of coach I want to play with.”

According to the On3 Consensus, Lyons is ranked No. 473 nationally and No. 13 in Pennsylvania. However, our scouts at On3 rank him as a four-star player, coming in at No. 244 nationally and No. 4 in Pennsylvania.

In March, he announced that Penn State was one of five schools standing out, along with Cincinnati, Illinois, Pitt and West Virginia. He was expected to take official visits to Illinois and West Virginia in June, but that’s now up in the air.
