Penn State quarterback commit Jaxon Smolik led Dowling Catholic to an important win over rival Ankeny this past Friday. The three-star prospect was facing one of the nation’s top-ranked quarterbacks in future Iowa State Cyclone JJ Kohl. Smolik finished the game completing 13 of 19 pass attempts for 127 yards and one passing touchdown. He also rushed for 24 yards and had a quarterback sneak for a score. For comparison, Kohl finished the game 14 of 27 passing for 130 yards. He also rushed for 29 yards.

With Ankeny running a unique style of defense – the Hawks often had their defensive linemen standing up, sometimes even five yards off the ball – the game plan didn’t call for Smolik to be throwing the ball deep downfield. Dowling ran the ball 49 times total, using sophomore Ra’Shawd Davis and junior CJ Phillip to pound the ball throughout the second half.

He may not have put up massive stats, but there were still plenty of positives to take away from the performance, as Smolik made smart decisions throughout the game. He also showed good pocket awareness and overall athleticism that’s better than most give him credit for.

To get a better feel for his overall performance, we put together some highlights from the game. You can watch those below.

Smolik and Dowling Catholic are now 2-1 on the season. The Maroons lost to defending state champion Southeast Polk in the season opener, 38-24. They’ve now rattled two straight wins, also defeating Waukee Northwest on Sept. 2, 45-19.

For the season, Smolik has now completed 53 of 78 pass attempts for 584 yards and four touchdowns. Dowling Catholic will host Iowa City High Friday night.
