Penn State makes top 10 for one of New Jersey's top prospects
Penn State made the cut with another top prospect in the Mid-Atlantic region.
After Saturday’s announcement that the Nittany Lions made the top nine for Maryland edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu, another top defensive prospect, safety Jayden Bonsu, announced his top 10 Sunday.
A four-star prospect from St. Peter’s Prep, Bonsu’s recruitment has been similar to Umeozulu. This time last year, Bonsu was little known, with Maryland being the first school to offer in September. By November, schools all across the country were circling. He’s now up to 25 scholarships and counting.
Now, it’s down to Penn State and nine other schools: Alabama, Georgia, Miami, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas and USC.

According to the On3 Consensus, Bonsu is ranked No. 236 nationally. He’s the 20th-ranked safety and third in New Jersey. Our scouts at On3 rank him even higher at No. 124 overall, eighth at safety and No. 2 in New Jersey.
Bonsu just got back from visiting Penn State this past weekend. It was his second trip to State College, with the first taking place in January. Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Michigan State are the other schools he’s visited so far. The Buckeyes have an official visit locked in for June 17-19.

“I learned about the family culture of Penn State,” Bonsu said, following the Jan. 15 visit. “The coaches take care of their players and take education very seriously, which is big for me. Coach [James] Franklin preached to us about academics and life after football, saying Penn State is a program that will set you up for life.
“What stood out was the family feel of the school, how they have a bunch of [academic support] to help students there succeed and the conversations I had today about academics and football.”
In addition to Bonsu, Penn State hosted a handful of other prospects Friday night. Three 2023 Pennsylvania prospects, running back London Montgomery, from Scranton, linebacker Phil Picciotti, from Perkasie, and wide receiver Kenny Johnson, from York, were also on campus. All three hold a scholarship offer from Penn State.
One of the nation’s top quarterbacks, Jadyn Davis, was also on campus. The Charlotte native then visited Ohio State on Saturday while in the region.
