Penn State quarterback commit Jaxon Smolik and Dowling Catholic have performed well to start the 2022 season. Following a collarbone injury that forced him to miss most of last season, Smolik has completed 40 of 59 attempts for 457 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions through the first two games. The Maroons sit at 1-1, with their loss coming to defending state champion Southeast Polk in the season opener.

On Friday night, Smolik will face one of his toughest remaining tests of the regular season, as Dowling Catholic will face local rival Ankeny. The Hawks feature two future Iowa State players, most notably four-star quarterback and one-time Penn State target JJ Kohl. Athlete Jamison Patton is another talented player who will challenge Smolik defensively. Ankeny is 2-0 to start the season. Kohl has completed 37 of 62 attempts for 431 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.

BWI’s Ryan Snyder traveled to Des Moines Friday to get an up-close look at Smolik. Blue White Illustrated subscribers can keep up-to-date with what’s taking place inside The Lions Den. You can also watch the game via CISN on YouTube. Click here to access that stream.
