Penn State has had an up and down couple of weeks on the recruiting trail but the Nittany Lions received some positive news Wednesday, as Virginia wide receiver Carmelo Taylor announced his decision to commit. Listed at 5-foot-11, 150 pounds, Taylor took an official visit to Penn State at the end of June. It was his only trip to State College.

According to the On3 Consensus, Taylor is ranked No. 323 nationally. He’s the 45th-ranked wide receiver and No. 6 in Virginia for the 2023 class.

On3’s Charles Power wrote that Taylor was among his biggest risers in the spring back in early June.

“Carmelo Taylor’s junior highlights were recently uploaded, prompting a number of offers to roll in for the Roanoke (Va.) Patrick Henry pass catcher,” Power wrote. “Taylor has landed offers from Virginia TechSouth Carolina, Penn State and West Virginia over the past few weeks. The attention comes with good reason. Taylor is an explosive vertical threat who blows by opposing cornerbacks. His speed was validated on the track this spring. Taylor consistently posted sub-11.0 second times in the 100 meters with a personal best of 10.59 seconds.”

Taylor did take additional official visits to South Carolina and Virginia Tech. South Carolina hosted him first on June 10, followed by Virginia Tech on June 17. Hokies head coach Brent Pry and his staff also hosted Taylor for an unofficial visit less than two weeks ago, July 30.

Following the decommitment of Yazeed Hayes, Penn State now has two wide receivers committed in its Class of 2023. Taylor joins New Jersey prospect Ejani Shakir, who committed back on May 11. Penn State is also having a strong year in the state of Virginia, totaling five commitments. OL Alex Birchmeier, LB Tony Rojas, DL Mathias Barnwell and OL Anthony Donkoh are the other four.

Penn State is now back up to 18 commitments total in the class. They remain at No. 10 nationally in the On3 Consensus Team Rankings with 91.324 points.
