Penn State drops in Coaches Poll & AP Top 25
Penn State dropped in both major polls Sunday, although not as much as some may have expected following the loss to Michigan. While the Wolverines deservedly rank among the nation’s best teams currently, Penn State was thoroughly beaten on both sides of the ball, as Michigan outgained the Nittany Lions 563 to 268.
The beatdown was one of the worst in recent years, as Penn State’s last loss by more than two scores took place in 2020 when Iowa won 41-21. However, it’s been a theme throughout Franklin’s tenure against Michigan, as the Wolverines beat Penn State 42-7 in 2018 and 49-10 in 2016.
Because of that, some speculated that the Lions would drop outside of the Top 20, but they only dropped six spots in both the Associated Press & Coaches Polls to No. 16 overall.

Elsewhere in the Big Ten, both Michigan and Ohio State remain playoff contenders. The Buckeyes are up to No. 2 in both polls, while Michigan improved to No. 3 in the Coaches Poll and No. 4 in the AP Top 25.
James Franklin and the Nittany Lions will now shift their focus to Minnesota, who also lost yesterday to Illinois. The Illini are also in the Top 25 now at No. 18 in the AP Poll and No. 20 in the Coaches Poll
