On Friday afternoon, Penn State fans got their first taste of new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki when he capped off the team’s Peach Bowl Media Day. You can hear his full comments here or on the Blue White Illustrated YouTube Channel.
We’ll recap some of his more prominent answers discussing Penn State and what he brings to Penn State.
Penn State OC Andy Kotelnicki describes his offense
While plenty of analysts and former players have described Kotelnicki’s offense in the leadup to his hiring at Penn State, he described it briefly during his press conference.
“Well, if I’m going to give you the elevator pitch on what we would want to do offensively, I would tell you that it’s a multiple pro-style offense that uses spread concepts and components,” Kotelnicki said.
“And emphasis on the word multiple, because to your point, it’s about putting players in a position to be successful.”
How to get the offense to play fast
One of the biggest talking points from Penn State assistant coaches Ja’Juan Seider and Ty Howle earlier in the day was getting the offense to play with confidence and speed. Kotelnicki gave his thoughts when asked.
“We always talk about win with speed. And so it’s your point about playing fast, right? Win with speed. Allow kids to think, react fast, everything like that.
So you talk about complexity versus simplicity, OK? Simplicity will always win.”
How will he handle the quarterback room?
Finally, Kotelnicki discussed his first impressions of Penn State starting quarterback Drew Allar.

“High capacity guy, you know what I mean? He’s in, wants to sit in on meetings, wants to be involved with game planning, wants to know the why of things. He’s the kind of guy who’s a coach on the field and you could give plenty of responsibilities, too, to make sure you’re in the right place. So my initial impressions with him are very, very impressive from the kind of things that you want from a quarterback.”
Kotelnicki also divulged the plan for the Penn State quarterback room moving forward. The plan will be a collaborative approach.
“Yeah, there’s going to be three of us that will work with the quarterbacks: Coach Franklin, Danny O’Brien, and me.”
“And I know Danny’s been there for the last couple of weeks who I’ve interacted with.He does a fantastic job. You have a chance for a guy who’s played professional football at the quarterback position to interact with your quarterbacks,” he said.
“I think that’s a huge deal.”
“And then Coach Franklin being an offensive guy, do you know what I mean, involved, and then myself having coached quarterbacks in the past and then having to be able to see the whole big picture with him. So it’ll be very NFL-like in terms of how we interact with those guys.”
