Penn State and every Division I staff is searching high and low today for impactful additions via the transfer portal. With December 5 marking the start of the new transfer portal window, players all across the country are jumping in Monday to see what their options are. As of mid-afternoon, On3’s Transfer Portal Wire had surpassed 800 players with no signs of slowing down.

For Penn State, it’s no secret that wide receiver is expected to be a major point of emphasis in the portal, as head coach James Franklin and wide receiver coach Taylor Stubblefield search for additional weapons to surround quarterback Drew Allar next season. Former Oregon wide receiver Dont’e Thornton is high on their list, and now another receiver could be an option.

On Monday afternoon, Pittsburgh native Dante Cephas confirmed via Twitter that Penn State has extended a scholarship offer. A Class of 2019 prospect from Penn Hills, Cephas had productive seasons at Kent State the past two years. In 2021, he totaled 1,240 yards receiving and totaled nine touchdowns for the Golden Flashes playing in all 14 games. He missed a few games in 2022 but still racked up 744 yards and three scores.

According to Pro Football Focus, Cephas was one of the nation’s most productive receivers this season, ranking 17th nationally out of more than 180 receivers who totaled 60 targets or more. His overall grade of 81.6 was higher than any receiver at Penn State this season. For reference, Parker Washington led PSU’s receiving corps with an overall grade of 76.4.

Penn State will have plenty of competition though. After entering, Cephas confirmed that Notre Dame, Pitt and West Virginia have also extended offers.

Since Cephas redshirted in 2019 and then got a free season due to COVID in 2020, he’ll enter 2023 with two seasons of eligibility remaining.
