Penn State one of 17 teams that can win CFP; Lions letterman enters coaching ranks: Newsstand
Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 4 include a look at the Lions’ spot in the College Football Playoff conversation, plus a note on a Lions letterman, headlines of the day, and more.
It’s time to dive into Friday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.
Penn State tweets of the day
We start with an opinion piece from ESPN. The outlet’s senior college football writer, Heather Dinich, picked 17 teams with a legitimate chance to win this year’s College Football Playoff. Penn State is one of them. What does Dinich believe the selection committee will like about head coach James Franklin’s team?
“The so-called eye test, as PSU should be one of the more complete teams in the mix,” Dinich writes. “Penn State’s defense can again be one of the best in the country in the second season under coordinator Manny Diaz, and the offense will be propelled by a rapidly emerging running game and arguably the best and deepest offensive line under coach James Franklin.”
Dinich does note, however, that the committee is unlikely to like the Lions’ non-conference schedule. It could put the team in a bind when matching resumes with other contenders.

Quote of the day
“This visit allowed me to get critiqued to help me identify what things I need to work on. There are many things that stand out every time I go to Penn State.
“The one thing that stood out above all else was the recognition that the two most important women in my life were missing [this trip]. From the first time I arrived on campus, they have spoken about the culture of family, and it was shown with the inquiries about my mom and baby sister.”
