Penn State is set to open its 2022 season at Purdue. The two teams will no longer meet on Sat., Sept. 3, however, as originally scheduled.

The matchup pitting the Nittany Lions opposite the Boilermakers at Ross-Ade Stadium will instead be played on Thur., Sept. 1. Both schools and the Big Ten announced the news Thursday.

Blue-White Illustrated’s Nate Bauer reported back when the conference first released its revised 2022 slate back in January that this was a possibility. Now, it is confirmed.

When could the game kick off?

Time and television details for the Week 1 clash were not immediately announced. However, it’s likely if not almost guaranteed that Penn State and Purdue will meet in the evening and on national television.

According to the 2022 college football schedule compiled by FBSchedules.com, seven games are now scheduled for Thur., Sept. 1.

More could be added, of course.

But at the moment, Penn State-Purdue and West Virginia at Pittsburgh are the marquee games on that date.

In fact, only four of the seven games feature at least one Power-5 school. Minnesota hosts New Mexico State, Wake Forest takes on VMI, and Arizona State has Northern Arizona coming to town.

Penn State-Purdue series history

Penn State leads the all-time series with Purdue 15-3. The Lions are in the midst of a nine-game winning streak. The sides last met back in 20-9, when head coach James Franklin’s team scored a 35-7 triumph at home. PSU was last in West Layfayette in 2016, when it pummeled the home side 62-24.

The Boilermakers last topped the Nittany Lions in 2004, when they snared a 20-13 win in State College. They also beat Penn State a year earlier at home by a 28-14 margin.
