Penn State news, notes, and updates for June 25 include a national writer’s win total prediction for the Nittany Lions, headlines of the day, and more.

It’s time to dive into Tuesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with a new season prediction for head coach James Franklin’s team. CBS Sports college football writer Tom Fornelli projects Penn State to go 10-2 in 2024. The losses, he thinks, will be to Ohio State and USC. If so, that record would still have the Nittany Lions in the 12-team College Football Playoff conversation, which they aim to make for the first time.

“Penn State will begin the season with College Football Playoff expectations, and it has a schedule that’ll help achieve those goals,” Fornelli writes in picking the team to eclipse its 9.5 win total at the sports books. “While Ohio State remains on the docket, there’s no Michigan or Oregon. And, while I have them losing on the road against USC, that’s not etched in stone. Should the new-look offense click and the defense maintain its usual performance, the Nittany Lions might find themselves in the Big Ten Championship Game.”

In other news, the NCAA Division I Council meets today and tomorrow in Indianapolis. Part of their work will be to vote on whether or not analysts can perform the same duties on practice and game day as the 10 on-field assistants and head coach do. The motion is expected to pass. If so, it would allow Lions legend Dan Connor, for example, to actually instruct the linebackers. He could not do that before.

“This is probably the most common sense approach that we could make,” Craig Bohl, the executive director of the American Football Coaches Associationtold Yahoo Sports in March. “To be concerned that you’re going to have an assistant quarterbacks coach out there coaching is counter productive. It’s been a compliance nightmare.”

Quote of the day

We definitely want to get him move involved in the pass game. Obviously, with our running back rotation, he comes off the field and stuff like that, but we’re looking into having him more involved in the pass game. So, for him, camp is going to be really important that.

“We want him to get his routes down and really understands why he’s running that route and the different concepts. That’ll allow us to be utilized more in the pass game too. I believe we could line him up in the slot and he’ll be a threat there, too. So, that’s going to be a challenge for him this year, but I believe he can do it and I believe he will do it. That’ll only make us better. As long as he’s on the field, you have to count for him, whether he’s in the backfield or or if he’s lined up in the slot.”
