Penn State recruiting heads into the summer months with plenty of work ahead of them. Despite May being a quiet period for news, there’s still plenty going on with the staff as they circle the country during the “evaluation period” of the recruiting calendar. Today, the BWI Daily recruiting show looks at several topics this spring, including the NCAA’s NIL guideline announcement.

Host Greg Pickel starts with the news that the NCAA released guidelines for how NIL should work in college sports. Will that do anything? And how will the NCAA enforce rules against collectives? Then, Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder give their thoughts.

TJ Metcalf keeps Penn State alive in his list of final schools

Next, the duo discusses players that have released their final list of schools heading into the summer official visit period. They focus on Alabama safety TJ Metcalf, who had Penn State in his final list of schools. After that, they broaden the discussion from Metcalf to all players releasing their top schools. So how should fans know if Penn State has a chance to land a player? Pickel and Snyder give you a helpful tip to know if your team is in the running.

After that, they discuss Snyder’s most recent recruiting prediction. This week, he put in a pick for Georgia offensive lineman Zech Owens, and he explains why.

Finally, Pickel and Snyder give their most intriguing announced official visit. Pickel chooses Owens, but Snyder brings up a name that might surprise Penn State fans. More surprising is the reason why.

Four Penn State players have been taken with one of the first 32 picks in the James Franklin era. That list starts with Saquon Barkley and also includes Micah ParsonsOdafe Oweh, and Dotson. All-time, 40 one-time Nittany Lions have been first-round selections.

Here’s a look at who could end up being No. 41.

Joey Porter Jr

Penn State corner Joey Porter Jr., was eligible to enter this year’s NFL Draft. However, the rangy defender with pro football bloodlines decided another season in State College was what he needed.

There’s no doubting Porter Jr.’s extreme talent, and his length (6-foot-2, 196 pounds) and massive wingspan cannot be taught. Reducing penalties is a must, but that also shows aggression.

One media mock draft is already calling him a potential first-round pick. It’s a bit too early for that, of course. But, with a strong season, he’s easily the most likely candidate to become the 41st Penn State player picked in Round 1.
