The midway point of another Penn State week in February has arrived.

On the hardwood, the Lions pulled off an upset Tuesday night at the Bryce Jordan Center. Meanwhile, a certain Penn State defensive lineman has been leading the way during winter workouts at Holuba Hall. And, a former Lion is reportedly set to return to a coordinator role.

Those three items headline the newsstand for Feb. 16. But, as always, there is much more to get to, as well.

Let’s dive into the top tweets and headlines about Penn State and college football on Wednesday.

We start with basketball.

Head coach Micah Shrewsberry’s team used a double-double from John Harrar, some extra motivation from a well-timed technical foul, and tight defense late to topple No. 19 Michigan State 62-58.

The victory was made all the more impressive by the fact that Penn State trailed by 14 with 13:20 to play. And, it didn’t take its first second half lead until there were about 90 seconds remaining. But, the Lions cemented a marquee win in Shewsberry’s first season nonetheless.

In other news, Jordan van den Berg has been picked as the ‘Iron Lion of the Week.’

The defensive tackle transferred to Penn State from Iowa Western Community College before the 2021 season started. Originally from Johannesburg, South Africa, van den Berg has a noticeable tenacity when on the field. He could find his way into the rotation this fall. That’s especially so if his weight room gains turn into on-field improvements.

Last fall, van den Berg netted five tackles (one for loss) over three games. He was also one of three Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year selections.

Finally, Penn State alum Al Golden is returning to the college coaching ranks. According to multiple media outlets, he is set to take the Notre Dame defensive coordinator job. No official announcement has been made as of 8 a.m. on Feb. 16, however.

Golden, 52, has been in the NFL since 2016. He most recently worked with the Cincinnati Bengals. He was last a defensive coordinator at Virginia in 2005. Two head coaching stints, at Temple and Miami, followed that before his move to the pros.

Quote of the day

“It was probably them playing a lot better that set me off a little bit. I thought our guys were competing. I disagreed with the official and what he called. But at the end of the day, he called the tech.

“It was over right after that. I went to him and I was like, ‘Hey man, sorry. It is what it is.’ And he said the same exact thing. And we kind of moved on from it. But immediately, Myles (Dread) came over and was like, ‘Hey, we got you, coach. We got you.’”
