Penn State picks up a recruiting win, looks ahead to Army Black Knight Invitational: Wrestling show
The Penn State wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated is now live! This week’s episode recaps the Lions’ week that was, covers a recruiting victory, and looks ahead to this weekend’s trip to West Point, N.Y.
Host Thomas Frank Carr and Greg Pickel start with a conversation about the season-opening weekend. Four of five Nittany Lions won their exhibition bouts at the NWCA All-Star Classic. Then, the Nittany Lions pounded Drexel 41-3. What were the top things we learned? The discussion focuses on how familiar wrestlers performed in their new weight classes, Shayne Van Ness’ return from injury to dominate in the NWCA All-Star Classic, Braeden Davis’ injury, and more.
From there, the conversation turns ahead to Cael Sanderson’s most recent news conference. What did we learn? Carr and Pickel discuss top takeaways from it including an update on Davis’ status, the head coach’s thoughts on star freshman Luke Lilledahl, the decision timeline to pick a starter at 197 pounds (which surely applies to 157, too), and more.

Next up on the docket is details on the first Penn State recruiting win in the Class of 2026. Top 20 junior Sam Herring, who wrestles at Bishop McCort in Johnstown, Pa., picked the Lions on Sunday. He has compiled a 39-12 record over his first two seasons at the standout Pennsylvania school. A three-time Super 32 place winner, Herring is No. 20 on MatScout’s Class of 2026 big board. He is No. 6 in InterMat’s 139-pound rankings, which puts him at No. 3 at that weight in the Keystone State. He projects as a middle weight at the next level, likely starting his time in State College at either 141 or 149 pounds.
