Penn State did very well in the recent update of the On300 recruiting rankings. Film analyst Thomas Frank Carr breaks down who moved where and gives his thoughts on which players are in the right spots in the rankings.

Penn State with two five-star linemen

The Nittany Lions have 11 players in the On300 rankings, which were updated Monday morning. T-Frank starts by discussing the top players for Penn State in the rankings, between five-star linemen Jven Williams and newly minted five-star Alex Birchmeier. Next, he discusses which players moved up and down the rankings for the Nittany Lions.

Risers and fallers

From there, he analyzes the players’ movement and why he thinks the new rankings are appropriate. For example, he looked at cornerback Elliot Washington and TJ Parker to discover why they slid down the top-150 rankings and why Jameial Lyons and King Mack shot up the board.

He also breaks down safety Conrad Hussey’s ascent and discusses why London Montgomery may have slid out of the top 300 players nationally.

Finally, he previews the open quarterback spot for the Nittany Lions, which doesn’t have a clear answer. So, he searches for answers by examining two potential candidates’ film. Those players are Iowa passer Jaxon Smolik and Michigan native Brady Drogosh. He explains what he sees from each player in terms of pros and cons.

Charles Power breaks down some of the biggest moves for Penn State recruits in updated On300

Penn State’s work on the recruiting trail was given another boost Monday following the updated On300 for the Class of 2023. While fans were already well aware of the amount of talent James Franklin and his staff were bringing in, the updated rankings provided an even clearer look at just how talented some of those players truly are.

Previously, Penn State had nine players in the updated On300. That’s now climbed to 11, as three prospects, King MackConrad Hussey and Joey Schlaffer, all joined the top 300. RB London Montgomery did slide out, but still remains a four-star player and someone who could find his way back into the On300. Montgomery was previously ranked No. 273 nationally, and over 30 new players joined the list.

To get a better feel for why some Penn State commits made the moves they did, I caught up with On3’s Director of Scouting & Rankings, Charles Power, to get his thoughts on some of the more notable moves in Monday’s update.

Saf. King Mack (New to the On300)

King Mack, who committed to Penn State June 30, was always expected to make a sizeable jump in this update. Back in June, Powers made it clear that Mack was on pace to earn a fourth star, but his climb was still impressive nonetheless, going from outside the top 300 to No. 88 overall nationally.
