Penn State head coach James Franklin opens up training camp

Penn State football is again well represented on The Athletic’s annual ‘Freaks List’ from longtime college football reporter and FOX broadcaster Bruce Feldman. Unlike some years in the James Franklin era, the Nittany Lions did not have anyone inside of the top 10. But, All-Big Ten defender Abdul Carter, who will play both defensive end and linebacker this fall, checked in just outside of it at No. 12 on the 100-man list.

“As he has moved from linebacker to the defensive line, the 6-3 Carter is up four pounds to 254,” Feldman writes. “He matched his numbers from last offseason. He’ll be an even bigger problem for rival quarterbacks now that he’s coming off the edge.

Penn State third-year defensive tackle Zane Durant is next on the list at No. 18.

“Durant was No. 38 on the list last year; he has added six pounds (up to 290) but hasn’t lost any speed, running another 4.66 40 this offseason,” Feldman writes. “His 660-pound squat set a Penn State record for defensive linemen.”

The third Nittany Lion on the list is junior running back Nicholas Singleton. The Penn State standout checks in at No. 29.

Last but not least, Penn State kickoff specialist Gabe Nwosu. Feldman notes that it was a tough call on which Nittany Lion to include at No. 91. That is where Nwosu landed.

“He is definitely not your average kicker or punter,” Feldman writes. “The sophomore from Maryland is 6-6 and 280 pounds. He benched 365 pounds, squatted 525 and cleaned 330.“

In addition to the four current Penn State players, one former Lion also made the cut. Defensive tackle Jordan van den Berg, who is now at Georgia Tech, checks in at No. 46. And, West Virginia quarterback Garrett Greene, who PSU faces in its opener, is at No. 86.
