Penn State news, notes, and updates for Jan. 16 include a look at ESPN’s All-American team, headlines of the day, and more. It’s time to dive into Thursday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

Most 2024 college football All-American teams were released following the conclusion of the regular season. The same goes for almost all individual honors. ESPN waited until just days before the College Football Playoff national title game to release its list of the nation’s top players, though, citing the importance of the first-, quarter, and semifinal round games. Penn State stars Abdul Carter and Tyler Warren made many lists before they shined in those contests and thus, unsurprisingly, made this one as well.

The defensive end is already a unanimous All-American, while the tight end is finding a spot on his third team, although ESPN’s is not one of the ones that is used to determine consensus or unanimous status.

“Warren, 6-6 and 261 pounds, became the first tight end in Big Ten history to catch 100 passes in a season and won the John Mackey Award as the top tight end in college football,” ESPN’s Chris Low writes.

He adds on Carter:

“Carter played through a painful shoulder injury in Penn State’s playoff semifinal loss to Notre Dame yet still managed a sack. He led all FBS players with 23.5 tackles for loss, including 12 sacks. The 6-3, 252-pound junior moved from linebacker to edge rusher this season and established himself as one of the most dynamic defenders in the country. He had four games with multiple sacks.”

Both players are expected to be first-round picks in the 2025 NFL Draft. That will take place April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisc.
