Penn State news, notes, and updates for Aug. 16 include ESPN’s ranking of the top 100 college football players, a Nittany Lion’s quest for world wrestling gold, and more.

It’s time to dive into Wednesday’s top tweets and headlines about the Nittany Lions and college athletics.

Penn State tweets of the day

We start with another ranking of college football’s top players. ESPN’s team of experts came together to pick the sport’s 100 best. Six Penn State players made the list. Three are inside of the top 50. Left tackle Olu Fashanu leads the way at No. 16. Running back Nicholas Singleton is at No. 29. And, cornerback Kalen King is No. 45.

“Fashanu passed up potentially being a first-round NFL draft selection to return for another season,” ESPN writes. “He was a big part of an offensive line that allowed Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen to enjoy such early success last season. The Nittany Lions averaged 181.1 yards on the ground — fourth in the Big Ten.”

Running back Kaytron Allen comes next at No. 68. Second-year Penn State defensive lineman Chop Robinson is No. 73. And, last but not least, linebacker Abdul Carter is No. 82.

“Carter was second on the Nittany Lions in tackles with 56 last season while leading the way with his 6½ sacks,” ESPN writes. “On the way toward earning second team All-Big Ten recognition, he became the eighth linebacker in school history to record at least 10 tackles for loss and six sacks in a season.”

In other news, Nittany Lion wrestler Mitchell Mesenbrink goes for a U20 World title today. He is in the finals of the 74 kilograms (163 pounds) freestyle division. The first-year Nittany Lion who transferred in from Cal Baptist looks to win first after future teammate Luke Lilledahl, who is a 2024 commit, took second at 57 kilograms (125 pounds) on Tuesday during the elite international event in Jordan.

Quote of the day

“What sparked my interest was the coaching staff and the great football culture. Penn State is one of the most iconic, talked about schools in the country.”

“So many great players have come out this program. Ever since I was young, the Nittany Lions were a team I would watch. One team I loved to watch was the 2016 squad, with players like Saquon BarkleyMike GesickiMiles Sanders and Chris Godwin. My favorite game they played was against my hometown team, USC. Ever since then, I’ve been heavily interested in the team.”
