Penn State blew out Maryland but…
Pickel and Bauer start the conversation by discussing the quarterback usage during the game. Starter Sean Clifford struggled during the first half of the game, throwing for only 139 yards on the night. Despite that, Penn State held a 27-0 lead at halftime, which extended to the final score during the third quarter.
But up by more than three scores, why didn’t backup Drew Allar come into the game to start the third? That’s what the pair disucss because it’s what is on most Penn State fans’ minds. Bauer starts by discussing Penn State head coach James Franklin’s program mentality and then taking that mentality and applying it to the situation. Next, he discusses the reality of the situation that Franklin outlined in his postgame remarks.
“I think early in the season a couple of games we had a plan to try to get Drew in at a certain series, but we’re way past that now. It just gets to the point where it’s how soon can we get him in the game where we feel like the lead is enough that we’re comfortable with doing it.

The other challenge though, is when we get Drew in the game, we got a bunch of other guys that we need to get out of the game. Then there’s a fine line because I want Drew in there with the starters. But then there’s also a fine line. You know, our depth is depleted on the offensive line. And we need to get those guys off the field because we can’t afford to have them late in the game in there. You know, it just it’s not the ideal situation.”
After moving on from the quarterback situation, Bauer highlights the dominant performance of the Penn State defense. Finally, they put the discussion about quarterback usage into context with the larger picture. They also discuss the status of several players, including Joey Porter Jr. and Olu Fashanu, who didn’t play on Saturday.
