Quarterback Drew Allar expected to return to Penn State for 2025 season
Penn State is set to lose one of its quarterbacks following Beau Pribula’s announcement Sunday night that he’s officially entering the transfer portal, but now it’s becoming much more clear why that is. According to ESPN.com reporter Pete Thamel, quarterback Drew Allar is expected to return to State College for his senior season in 2025.
Shortly after Thamel’s tweet, Allar publicly commented on the situation via social media. He didn’t completely confirm the report but also didn’t deny it either.
“This season has been the most fun I’ve had in my entire life playing football and I’m so proud of what we’ve accomplished as a team,” Allar posted. “I know there’s still more work to do which is why I look forward to making more memories with my teammates this year and beyond. But right now we are solely focused on the opportunity we have as a team in front of us.”
A former five-star recruit out of Medina, Ohio, Allar was the second-ranked quarterback prospect nationally in the Class of 2022. After enrolling early, the 6-foot-5, 235-pound signal-caller was immediately thrown into action for Penn State when quarterback Sean Clifford was injured against Purdue in the 2022 season opener. Allar went on to play in 10 games as a freshman that season.

But it was his sophomore season in 2023 when Allar took control of Penn State’s offense as the full-time starter. In 13 games, he threw for 2,631 yards, 25 touchdowns and just two interceptions. He set a collegiate record totaling 311 passing attempts without throwing an interception, although he also took some criticism from fans for not being more aggressive at times.

Heading into Penn State’s first-round matchup against SMU in the College Football Playoff, Allar had thrown for 2,894 yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions during his junior season campaign. He’s up to 5,869 yards passing throughout his career, totaling 50 touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Throughout the 2024 season, multiple outlets have projected Allar to rank among the top 10 available quarterbacks ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft. ESPN’s updated rankings had him projected at No. 7 for the quarterback position and No. 86 overall. Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders, Miami’s Cam Ward and Texas’ Quinn Ewers are currently ranked among the top three.
If Allar does stick with the Nittany Lions next season, it’ll represent a major win for the program’s College Football Playoff hopes in 2025, especially following Pribula’s exit. It’s no secret that the Nittany Lions have been aggressively pursuing wide receivers in the transfer portal over the past week. They are set to lose tight end Tyler Warren, who won this year’s John Mackey Award for the nation’s best tight end. He’s currently the second-ranked tight end by ESPN and No. 41 overall. However, Penn State also brings back Khalil Dinkins, Andrew Rappleyea and Luke Reynolds, so there’s no shortage of talent at the position.
Allar is expected to meet with the media Monday afternoon following James Franklin’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s showdown against SMU.
