Penn State quarterback Drew Allar recaps 27-11 win over UCLA
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar led the Nittany Lions offense to another win Saturday, beating UCLA 27-11 at Beaver Stadium. Aside from the game against Kent State, the 237 yards passing was his most so far this season. He completed 17 of 24 attempts, good for a 71 percent completion rate, while also adding a touchdown to tight end Tyler Warren in the second quarter.
Allar and the offense started slow in the first quarter, totaling just 28 yards of offense, including just nine passing yards. But that all changed once the second quarter got going, as Allar led the team on a 16-play, 82-yard drive that he punched in himself on the ground. From there, Penn State’s offense had just one three and out the rest of the game, scoring on four consecutive drives and five of their final six before running out the clock.
“We started slow. Obviously, we want to fix that going into next week, but for us, I think UCLA is a really good team,” Allar said. “They had a top-15 defense in the country last year. I know they had a couple changes, but it’s still a lot of the same players there, so they’re very talented on the back end and up front.”

He went on to add, “I think when we got our rhythm going, we were hard to stop. It’s just about getting into a rhythm quicker. Me getting the ball out a little bit faster and more accurate on the first drive, maybe we sustain that drive and go down the field and score, and it’s a different type of ball game at that point. But for us, offensively, it’s just about starting faster. Once we got that ball rolling and we were moving, we were hard to stop.”

Now, five games into the season, Allar is up to 1,101 yards passing. He’s thrown nine touchdowns and has just one interception. He’s also rushed for three more scores.
The Nittany Lions will need him to play at his best next week, as they’ll face the other Los Angeles-based Big Ten program when they take on No. 11 USC at the LA Coliseum. It’s one of two marquee games left on the schedule. After a bye week and a trip to Wisconsin on Oct. 26, Penn State will return home to face third-ranked Ohio State on Nov. 2.
